Jornada 3: Atlético de Madrid 4 Recreativo de Huelva 0

Posted by atleti on September 20, 2008

Another masterful, comfortable victory in front of the Atleti Faithful

Coupet; Seitaridis, Ujfalusi, Perea, Antonio López; Maniche (Éver 68’), Raul García, Simão (Luis García 56’), Maxi; Sinama-Pongolle & Kun Agüero (Miguel 60’)

GOALS
8′ Agüero, set-piece taken by Simao.
52′ Maniche, incredible effort.
77′ Sinama-Pongolle, sublime run by Miguel.
88′ Sinama-Pongolle, superb pass by Luis.

Solid performance all around, particularly by Maniche.

Kun continues to impress me again and again and again. And again!

Sinama is more than capable of playing in place of the injured Uruguayo. Oodles of talent, pace, and an eye for goal.

Simao— a total class act and set-piece genius. Always threatening and clever when he has the ball at his feet.

Ujfalusi— the strong Czech centre-back. What did we do without him?!

Coupet— the experienced Frenchman. Rock solid performance today.

Substitutes, Miguel and Luis in particular, continue to prove that we have depth on the bench.

My one worry at the moment are the fullbacks.

All in all, though, I couldn’t be happier with our recent performances and style of play– fairly solid defence and attack-minded. Is this our season to achieve great things?

Our next three fixtures:
Wednesday, 24 September: away to Getafe.
Sunday, 28 September: home to Sevilla.
Wednesday, 1 October: home to Marseille.

VAMOS ATLETI

Jornada 1: Atlético de Madrid v Málaga CF

Posted by atleti on August 30, 2008

FINALLY, the start of the 08/09 season! Fortunately, I have VERIZON FIOS as my cable provider, so I can watch Liga games (en vivo). Unfortunately, though, our opening game will NOT be televised. I will, instead, follow through the Internet.

In any case, we face newly promoted Málaga CF, a team that has been a bit of a yo-yo and not a stranger to the top division. They earned promotion last season by finishing in the #2 spot. From what I’ve been reading, their manager is expected to field a 4-2-2-1-1 formation for the game. Their side is not without doubts: Apparently the three questions looming are 1) goalkeeping, 2) defensive mid, and 3) which striker to put up front. If anyone knows anything else about the current status of this team, do share!

Slightly off topic: Éver Banega, our on-loan Argentine midfielder, trained with the team today. It’ll be interesting to see how he blends with the current team. It’ll be tough for him to break into the starting 11, I think, unless he truly shines when he does play.

[Update] OUR STARTING 11: Coupet; Seitaridis, Heitinga, Ujfalusi, Pernía; Assunçao, Maniche; Simão, Maxi; Agüero & Forlán.

SUBS: Leo Franco, Pablo, Perea, Antonio López, Raúl García, Luis García, Sinama-Pongolle.

Coupet chosen over Leo Franco because Aguirre feels he has played well. NO idea why Pernía earned a starting 11 spot…Did he play OK against Schalke?!

NOT CHOSEN AT ALL (TACTICAL DECISION): Ángel Bernabé, Miguel, Banega, Valera & Camacho.

Let’s start this season with a win!

And always…y como siempre, AUPA ATLETI!

Kun Succeeds with Argentina…

Posted by atleti on August 19, 2008

(3-0 against Brasil)

…while the rest of the team continue to struggle.

Trofeo Teresa Herrera
Atlético 2 Deportivo 1
Our only goal scored by De Abreu (45′).

Atlético 3 Sporting de Gijón 3
Goals by Maniche (7′), Luis García (30′) and Diego Costa (79′).

More of the same nonsense this season or will the return of Kun improve our game? I hope the latter…

Rumours, rumours, rumours…will we make one more signing before the transfer window closes? We need a playmaker desperately!!! Pernía, Cléber, and Maniche should be shown the exit. Will that happen? Unlikely at this point…

This & That

Posted by atleti on August 8, 2008

I’m back from hot, hot, hot Florida.

Last Pre-season friendly: Rayo 2 Atlético 4
I didn’t watch it, but apparently Maxi had a great game as did Ujfalusi. Poor positioning by Leo Franco led to the second goal.

CHAMPIONS
Aguirre submitted this squad for our Champions clash against Schalke:

GK: Leo Franco, Coupet, Ángel Bernabé.

DF: Valera, Pablo, Perea, Antonio López, Pernía, Heitinga, Ujfalusi, Seitaridis, Álvaro Domínguez, César Ortiz.

MF: Raúl García, Maxi, Luis García, Assunção, Miguel, Cléber, Camacho, Maniche, Simão, Joshua Zapata, Rubén Pérez.

FW: Agüero, Forlán, Sinama Pongolle, Rubén Ramos.

So…..Coupet or Leo Franco against Schalke? I’m leaning towards Coupet occuying the starting position, purely for his experience.

TRANSFER NEWS: Reyes, as everyone should know by now, will play for Benfica on a one-year loan with the option to make it a permanent move. I know some people wanted to give him another shot, but we have too many excess players and I’m glad he’s gone. Now, if we can find clubs for Seitaridis, Maniche, and Cléber, I think we’d have a stronger squad.

KUN WATCH
He played 80 minutes in Argentina’s 2-1 win against the Ivory Coast. No injuries picked up (although his hand was wrapped up) and I’ve read around the blogosphere that he didn’t have a particularly effective performance.

Anything missing?

Catching Up Entry

Posted by atleti on June 9, 2008

Lots of players on international duty for EURO and WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS.

Ujfaluši played a full 90 minutes for the Czech Republic’s opening game against Switzerland.

Simão played 83 minutes for Portugal against Turkey.

Seitaridis & Heitinga have games this coming week. Speaking of Seitaridis, I do recall reading that the Greek might leave the club this summer.

Meanwhile, Kun & Maxi continue have played two friendlies so far, all warm-up for Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers.

Forlán will serve international duty for Uruguay in their World Cup qualifiers.

I hope that they all return fully fit by the start of 08/09…

RUMOURS GALORE

Too many to list, but here are a few.

According to some (albeit dubious) sources, we’re linked with Recreativo’s Sinama, Zaragoza’s Oliviera (on loan?), Getafe’s Uche,  and Paulo Assunçao.

Am I the only one completely underwhelmed by these players?

Then there are the rumours involving Lucho González & Luca Cigarini, which are total rubbish as well.

Meanwhile, the English press claims Newcastle have offered us 10 million euros for Reyes. Of course, even if that was true, Reyes has said many times that he hates England. Another rubbish rumour.

All the while, black-listed Maniche has declared that he will not return to the club if Aguirre continues as manager. Of course, that means he won’t be returning. Good riddance, I say.

Some good news is that ALEX QUILLO, Atleti youth product, has signed a professional contract with the club until 2010.

INJURY NEWS
Motta
will hopefully be back to full fitness by the start of the season, having recovered from that persistent knee injury. It’s a shame he’s so injury-riddled because he truly is an excellent player when fit.

New entry will be up later on today (Monday).

Thoughts on the 07/08 Season

Posted by atleti on May 19, 2008

It’s been another rollercoaster of a season, hasn’t it? Lots of highs, lots of lows, and I’m glad it’s all over because my nerves are shot…

Let’s have a look at our pre-season objectives:

-Be crowned Liga Champions. (too many dropped points)

-Win the UEFA Cup. (dumped out at the hands of rubbish Bolton)

-Win the Copa del Rey. (dumped out at the hands of rubbish Valencia)

-Qualify for Champions League football.

Well, at least we accomplished one of our goals. It’s already paid off in terms of 08/09 signings: we’ve secured the services of John Heitinga and, although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, Tomáš Ujfaluši looks like he’ll be our next signing.

Speaking of transfers, I choose SIMAO as our best signing of the 07/08 season:

Worst signing of 07/08? I choose the always-injured THIAGO MOTTA.

Yes, I’d rank him as worse than Cléber and Reyes. Had he been fit, we would not have had to use Cléber so frequently. In truth, though, all three of these players were nonsensical signings.

Consistently good players this season: Raúl García & Agüero.

I’d give the industrious award to Forlán. He continually put forth a lot of effort. He can be frustrating at times when he misses absolute sitters, but he creates plenty of goal-scoring opportunities for Kun and other players.

Worst players? I’m torn on this. For me, it’s a threeway tie between Eller, Pablo,  & Pernía. Pablo, I think, takes the cake because of his disastrous own goals. WILL SOMEONE PLEASE SHOW THIS RUBBISH THE EXIT? PLEASE?

Who had a disappointing season? I choose Maxi. Not a bad season, but most definitely not a good one. There were far too many times where I felt that he should’ve been removed from the pitch. He had a horrible tendency of disappearing for long portions of some games.

Surprise mid-season addition to the squad: the promising young Ignacio Camacho. The future is bright.

Anything else to add? Any memorable moments that stick out in your mind? Any forgettable moments you want to dredge up?

[These are the players I’d like to see shown the exit now: Pablo, Pernía, Cléber, Eller, Zé Castro, Reyes, & Mista. They’re all dead weight and have proven to be good for nothing.]

And, no, I’m not happy that Aguirre will stay with the club for another season. He has proven time and time again that he is NOT a tactical genius.

Champions: Mission Possible….?

Posted by atleti on April 29, 2008

Or, will we throw it all away in the final games of the season?

I don’t think I can take much more of this, to be honest.

Our next fixtures:

-home to Recreativo Huelva

-away to Espanyol

-home to Deportivo la Coruna

-away to Valencia

This will be the longest four weeks of our lives.

Meanwhile, we are linked with Oporto’s Argentine left winger, Lucho Gonzalez. What’s more, he has expressed interest in the speculation by saying that we’re a great club with two top Argentines in the squad (Kun & Maxi).

This is a rumour, but it got me thinking about our current wingers:

Maxi.
Will he stay or will he go? He has been rather disappointing this season, I think. I only hope returns to a more consistent form soon.

Simão.
Untouchable as far as I’m concerned! Easily one of the best additions to the midfield.

Luis García.
Surplus. Better suited as a sub coming off the bench than as a starting 11 player.

Jurado.
He is linked with a move out of the club, it seems. Mallorca?

Reyes.
More negative news on him than positive news when it comes to him. He claims he wants to stay at the club, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was shown the door.

Quick Poll

Posted by atleti on April 15, 2008

Who should be our manager for next season?

The season isn’t over, but that shouldn’t stop us from thinking about our 08/09 campaign– it’s right around the corner…

Personally, I don’t like Aguirre: it’s time for a change. But who? I’m not so sure.  I like the idea of Laudrup as the next in charge. A blog commentator brought up his name in a previous entry. There are other quality managers as well, though. It all depends on their availability, unfortunately.

Unrelated:

RUMOUR-MILL
Chelsea are after Kun? Apparently Abramovich has his eyes set on signing our star striker. Will it happen? I doubt it.

Seitaridis to Aston Villa…for 10 million euros?! Bizarre rumour…considering the amount.

It’s still Tuesday!

Posted by atleti on March 25, 2008

It’s been a busy few days for me– that time of year– you know how it is! But here’s a new entry with some of this & some of that.

Firstly, Jornada 29: Sevilla 1 Atleti 2.

Not much to say except that it’s a massive boost for our goal of securing a Champions spot!

Abbiati; Antonio López, Pablo, Perea, Pernía; Camacho (Jurado 90’), Raúl García (Cléber 51’), Maxi, Simão; Forlán & Kun Agüero.

OUR GOALS
18′ Maxi (good work by Forlán)
57′ Agüero (assist by Antonio López)

You’ve seen it already, but it’s worth posting it up here, as a reminder:

1 Real Madrid 62
2 Barcelona 58
3 Villarreal 56
4 Atlético 50
5 Racing 47
6 Sevilla 45

A 3-point cushion– let’s not lose it, for the love of God! As Raul said, “We’re in the driving seat” now.

CRUNCH-TIME!
Next five fixtures:

-away to Villarreal
-home to Almeria
-away to Real Valladolid
-home to Real Betis
-away to Getafe

Not a bad set of games coming up. In fact, I fancy our chances against all of these teams. The Yellow Submarine and SuperGeta are the toughest of them all, I think.

Meanwhile, DUTY CALLS!

INTERNATIONAL DUTY, THAT IS.
ARGENTINA:
Maxi & Agüero
GREECE: Seitaridis
PORTUGAL: Simão
U-21 SPAIN: Raúl García & Jurado

Key players will be playing for their countries. Here’s hoping everyone returns uninjured.

Midweek Hodgepodge/Talking Points

Posted by atleti on March 4, 2008

A bit of a busy few days for me recently- I apologise for the lack of entries and commenting on other blogs. I hope to get back to my normal routine soon enough.

KUN TALK OF THE TOWN

Ever since his performance against Barcelona, the press have been gushing about him- and rightly so. KUN is world-class and arguably one of the best strikers we’ve ever had at the club.

Meanwhile, Maradona on our defence after the Barcelona game:
“How did I see my ‘son-in-law’ against Barcelona? When Ronaldinho scored early on, I thought Barça were going to run all over them, but then Sergio awakened…He showed his quality and began to make life hard for Milito and Puyol…However, of course, the Atletico defence is like that of Flandria, but in the end everything went well.”

OK, I know what you’re thinking: Who cares what Maradona thinks. I normally don’t pay much mind to his press talks, but this is Atleti-related so I had to include it.

INJURY UPDATE NEWS
Leo Franco
has officially recovered from his injury. He’s back to full training with the squad. I don’t expect him to play right away, but his return to 100% match fitness means the eventual end of Falcón’s time as second choice goalkeeper. I wonder, then, What will become of the promising young goalkeeper this summer– Will we keep him? Or…?

Seitaridis is nearing the end of his recuperation and is expected to re-join the team during training sessions soon.

Simão seems to have picked up a slight knock and trained lightly recently– nothing severe, thankfully.

Motta? Well, he’ll be out for the rest of the season. It’s a shame we didn’t sign him on a pay-as-you-play contract during the pre-season…

OUR NEXT FIVE FIXTURES
Zaragoza v Atlético
Atlético v Levante
Sevilla v Atlético
Villarreal v Atlético
Atlético v Almeria

Not a bad schedule, all things considered. Sevilla & Villarreal away will be the toughest of the bunch.

Simão on the rest of the season:
“All of the twelve games left are important, and we must start with a win against Zaragoza, who are having a difficult time at the moment, but have a lot of quality and do not deserve to be in the position they currently occupy. It will be a difficult encounter, but we come into it in good spirits and must continue a positive run.”

RUMOUR-MILL ON FIRE
Fiorentina’s Czech defender Ujfalusi has once again been linked to us.

AS also reports that we might be ‘fishing’ for talent at Liverpool this summer: Benitez, Xabi, and Reina. Xabi, in particular, appears to be a player that has fallen our of favour at Liverpool. Reina’s father played for Atleti many years ago, so he would be more than welcome to the club.
