Champions: Atlético de Madrid v Liverpool

Posted by atleti on October 22, 2008

I’m going to keep this short & sweet…let’s just win or, at the very least, draw.

This current losing streak has been unbearable- something out of this game would make us feel a little bit better.

[Update from UEFA site] STARTING 11: Leo Franco, Seitaridis, Antonio Lopez, Forlan, Luis Garcia, Sinama, Maniche, Simao, Perea, Camacho, Joshua.

SUBS: Bernabe, Pernia, Heitinga, Raul garcia, Assuncao, Miguel, Aguero.

Thoughts on the game are much appreciated! I’ll be out of work early today, so I’ll be watching it en vivo on the Internet.

UEFA at it again.

Posted by atleti on October 14, 2008

Thanks for ruining our next two home games and Torres’ return to El Vicente Calderón , UEFA!

From what I’ve read, Liverpool & Atlético are working to have them overturn this decision as it is too short notice. Like Torres, I hope that there can be a ‘solution’ to allow the game.

Jornada 3: Atlético de Madrid v Recreativo de Huelva

Posted by atleti on September 19, 2008

((For those of us in the USA: This game will be televised (en vivo!) on Saturday on channel GolTV, 2.00pm (EST)))

First and foremost, this is a special fixture for Sinama as it is his first game against his ex-club, Recre– the club which signed him from Liverpool. Then, of course, there was Kun’s ‘hand of God’ incident.

OFFICIAL STARTING 11: Coupet, Seitaridis, Ujfalusi, Perea, Antonio López, Maniche, Raul García, Simão, Maxi, Sinama-Pongolle & Agüero.

SUBS: Leo Franco, Pablo, Pernía, Luis García, Assunção, Banega, Miguel.

INJURED: Forlán & Heitinga.

The same defence that lost against Valladolid! In terms of Heitinga, he is only mildly injured; from what I gather, he’s recovering from the few knocks that he picked up since international duty.

(It’s a  bit troubling to see that Camacho, one of our most talented canteranos, has not played at all this season…)

In any case, this is a MUST WIN game. Not only because we are playing at home and we have a stronger squad, but also because Recre reek of Segunda División this season.

Champions: PSV 0 Atlético de Madrid 3

Posted by atleti on September 16, 2008

Back to Champions, in style!

Leo Franco; Perea, Ujfalusi, Heitinga, Antonio López; Assunçao, Maniche (54′ Banega), Luis García, Simao; Forlán (31′ Sinama) & Agüero (63′ Raúl García).

8′ Agüero, assisted by Luis García.
35’Agüero, great effort by Sinama.
53′ Maniche, great work by Simao & Luis García.

We played solidly for large portions of the game, particularly in defence. Attack-wise, we continued to pile on the pressure. For their part, PSV’s defence was…well, wobbly, to say the least.

Forlán will be out injured for a month. I wish him a speedy recovery! Until then, here’s hoping for a potent strike partnership between Kun & Sinama.

Champions: PSV Eindhoven v Atlético de Madrid

Posted by atleti on September 16, 2008

I’ve finally recovered from that disastrous 2-1 loss to Valladolid.

Players experienced with Champions: Coupet, Forlán, Simao, Luis García, Seitaridis, Maniche, Assunçao, Heitinga, Sinama, & Leo Franco.

Excluded players: Maxi & Pernía (suspension) and Pablo (injury).
Is anyone else relieved that Pernía & Pablo WON’T be available?!

[Update] STARTING 11: Leo Franco; Perea, Ujfalusi, Heitinga, Antonio López; Paulo Assunçao, Maniche, Luis García, Simao; Forlán & Agüero.

SUBS: Coupet, Seitaridis, Raúl García, Sinama-Pongolle, Banega, Miguel, Camacho.

Looks good to me!

Thoughts & comments on the game can be shared in this entry!

Champions: Schalke 1 Atlético de Madrid 0

Posted by atleti on August 14, 2008

Briefly: what a horrendous, embarassing way to begin out 08/09 Champions campaign. Once again, we are left with a bitter taste in our mouths. Again and again… and again.

Two positives in all of this? That it was only a 1-0 loss and that we will have Kun back from international duty for the second leg, in a do or die situation.

As a lot of sources have been reporting, Schalke were far more superior, particularly in the first half, with clear opportunities at goal.

ThE UGLY: We lacked attacking edge and creativity; nervous defending, especially on the flanks; and the explusion of Antonio López in the 74th minute. Anything else to add?

I am most disappointed with Forlán.

Anything missing? Any other positives? Negatives?

Champions: FC Schalke 04 v Atlético de Madrid

Posted by atleti on August 11, 2008

[UPDATE] SUPPORTERS IN THE USA: The first leg will NOT be shown live. ESPN Deportes channel will show it delayed at 8.00pm (Eastern Time). Watch it LIVE (en vivo) on the Internet!

The 08/09 Premier League season will start up this weekend and undoubtedly many of us will be keeping an eye out on that, in terms of build-up…but don’t forget our FIRST LEG OF THE CHAMPIONS THIRD QUALIFYING ROUND!

Here’s the squad that will be traveling to Germany:

GK: Coupet, Leo Franco.

DF: Seitaridis, Antonio López, Pernía, Heitinga, Ujfalusi, Perea, Pablo, Valera.

MF: Cléber, Raúl García, Luis García, Maxi, Assunção, Miguel, Simão, Camacho.

FW: Diego Forlán, Sinama Pongolle.

MOTTA is still recuperating from his injury and MANICHE was omitted by technical decision. In other words, we are still in search for a club for him. KUN is still participating in the Olympics, of course.

According to AS, all of our summer signings will play in this first leg, with the exception of Coupet.

Here’s what they say our starting 11 will look like:

Leo Franco, Antonio López, Heitinga, Ujfalusi, Perea, Simão, Assunção, Raúl García, Maxi, Forlán, & Sinama Pongolle.

Not bad at all. The only important piece missing is Kun.

Anyone know what might be Schalke’s starting 11?

Let’s hope for the best result possible…and always:

This & That

Posted by atleti on August 8, 2008

I’m back from hot, hot, hot Florida.

Last Pre-season friendly: Rayo 2 Atlético 4
I didn’t watch it, but apparently Maxi had a great game as did Ujfalusi. Poor positioning by Leo Franco led to the second goal.

Aguirre submitted this squad for our Champions clash against Schalke:

GK: Leo Franco, Coupet, Ángel Bernabé.

DF: Valera, Pablo, Perea, Antonio López, Pernía, Heitinga, Ujfalusi, Seitaridis, Álvaro Domínguez, César Ortiz.

MF: Raúl García, Maxi, Luis García, Assunção, Miguel, Cléber, Camacho, Maniche, Simão, Joshua Zapata, Rubén Pérez.

FW: Agüero, Forlán, Sinama Pongolle, Rubén Ramos.

So…..Coupet or Leo Franco against Schalke? I’m leaning towards Coupet occuying the starting position, purely for his experience.

TRANSFER NEWS: Reyes, as everyone should know by now, will play for Benfica on a one-year loan with the option to make it a permanent move. I know some people wanted to give him another shot, but we have too many excess players and I’m glad he’s gone. Now, if we can find clubs for Seitaridis, Maniche, and Cléber, I think we’d have a stronger squad.

He played 80 minutes in Argentina’s 2-1 win against the Ivory Coast. No injuries picked up (although his hand was wrapped up) and I’ve read around the blogosphere that he didn’t have a particularly effective performance.

Anything missing?
