Jornada 5: Atlético de Madrid v Sevilla FC

Posted by atleti on September 28, 2008

(Good news for those of us in the USA: The game will be televised (en vivo!) on channel GolTV.)

This game marks the start of a difficult run of games: home to Sevilla, away to Barcelona, home to Real, and away to Villarreal.

STARTING 11: Coupet; Seitaridis, Ujfalusi, Perea, Antonio López; Raúl García, Éver, Maxi, Luis García; Agüero & Sinama.

SUBS: Leo Franco, Pablo, Pernía, Assunção, Miguel, Camacho, Keko (Atleti B player).

Éver receives his first starting 11 spot– his selection surprised quite a few folks as Assunção seemed to be a likely replacement for Maniche.

KEY PLAYERS STILL INJURED: Forlán, Maniche, Simão, Heitinga.

For their part, Sevilla arrive unbeaten after four rounds of Liga.

Their chosen squad: Palop, Javi Varas, Konko, Crespo, Dragutinovic, Squillaci, Fernando Navarro, David Prieto, Duscher, Fazio, Jesus Navas, Maresca, Capel, Romaric, Adriano, Kanouté, Luis Fabiano, Chevantón.

Lots of pace in the wings for this team. How will the likes of Seitaridis contain a player like Capel? I hope for the best, of course, but the Greek hasn’t inspired much confidence in me. I hope our fullbacks can keep their cool… Navas, Capel, Luis Fabiano & Kanouté are all dangerous threats.

This has the makings of being a cracker. Let’s hope that we are the victorious ones… A por las putillas cerdillistas!

The game starts at 3:00pm (15:00) for me.

  2. I agree, Seitaridis in our major weakness. However, this Sevilla have also their own weaknesses in the midfield and at the back line. I presume an open game until the end of the match, which hopefully we win 3-1, or 4-2. I wish. Un abrazo. miguel

Is Coupet the right choice for this game? Kanoute and Fabiano are good in the air while Coupet seems to struggle with high balls.

Simao is sorely missed today. Luis isn’t there. Even Aguero can’t understand how the ball is going to played to him!

Old mediocre Atleti. I guess that sums it all for me !!

Probably the absolute worst first atletico game for me to be attending…naturally my first is also the first home loss of the season. I was disgusted by the lack of heart in many of the players. In the waning moments, I think luis garcia had a tough but easily playable ball sent to him and he just didn’t go after it, meanwhile aguero was running as hard as he can to make up for luis garcia’s mistake. No sense of desire whatsoever. And i think literally every touch pernia had was bad, the crowd would gasp whenever he touched the ball…

I hope the marseille game will be a much different story. So far Kun takes over in the champions league games so we’ll see.

Very bad match, yesterday. An indolent team without ideas amb without players. Greatings from Spain.

Quite frankly, if Aguero isn’t 100% fit then Aguirre shouldn’t have played him. The squad is inadequate to deal with 3 competitions especially when crucial players get injured. Our midfield were crap they need to learn the basics of passing the ball to each other and keeping hold of the ball rather than giving it away at the earliest moment. Kun played out of position for most of the game to try and compensate for the lack of any sort of creativity, and he was hacked down so many times, we were lucky that he didn’t get seriously injured.
Now, both Seiteridis and Pablo are injured meaning we have little in the way of defensive cover, if any of the other defenders get injured.

Our first home champions league game for 12 years is tomorrow. I think we should honor it with a win.
