The Midfield

Posted by atleti on July 26, 2008

I read recently that Maniche is trying to ‘patch things up’ with Aguirre, his teammates, and club officials for his wreckless behaviour that led to his loan spell last season. Of course, we all know why he is humbling himself: He’s not attracting worthwhile offers!

I am motivated to return to work. I want to be at my best physical form so that I can have a good season.

Can we trust that he won’t act out again? I’m not so sure. Do we even need his services? He’s not in top shape at the moment and we do have Camacho, Assunção, and Motta as holding midfield options.

Meanwhile, we have less than a month before the season starts and an even shorter amount of time before Champions qualifiers begin…I worry that we still have not signed a decent playmaker.

What’s more, we still have Cléber in our ranks– I thought he would have been one of the first to make his way out of the club. I read a rumour that the club received offers for him, but nothing became of that.

Anything missing?

Pre-season Mexican Friendlies

Posted by atleti on July 15, 2008

Puebla 1 Atleti 0

One casuality in this friendly: Álex Quillo suffered a fracture. Other than that, the scoreline doesn’t worry me too much. We have a lot of new players and they will need time to blend as a team. Let’s hope that we improve with each game.

Next up? They play Cruz Azul on Wednesday.

Also: truth be told…I’m concerned about our lack of a true playmaker. Are there any other areas that you think should be addressed BEFORE the start of the season? Or, does everything seem fairly good at this point?

Also, to any English-speaking readers out there,  who don’t know, the Liga 08/09 schedule won’t be released until the end of this month (July).

Posted by atleti on July 7, 2008

Just a very quick entry to say that article and photos of Florent’s presentation & press talk are on the official website.

“I see myself winning a trophy with Atlético de Madrid this year.”

From his lips to God’s ears!

Assunçao becomes our 5th Signing

Posted by atleti on July 6, 2008

According to our official website, Paulo Assunçao, 28 year old Brasilian midfielder, has signed a contract with us– details still remain unclear at this moment. It’s been a long process (due to his falling out with Oporto’s management), but it’s finally over, thank goodness.

Assunçao is a defensive midfielder. According to one article I’ve read, his style is very similar to Chelsea’s Makelele. I hope he adjusts well to our team because with Motta still fairly fragile, we’ll need a reliable defensive mid to allow the likes of Raúl García more opportunities to attack.

Has anyone seen him play? Any thoughts on him?

Meanwhile, we’re still on the lookout for a club for Maniche. According to our official website, there are quite a few clubs interested in the Portuguese international.

Coupet signs for Atlético

Posted by atleti on July 4, 2008

Another Frenchman! According to Lyon’s official website, Grégory Coupet signed a 2-season contract worth 1.5 million euros with us. There is an additional 500,000 available in the contract if we qualify for Champions this season and in 09/10.

I think he’s another good addition to the squad and will prove to be of better quality than Abbiati.

Très bien!

Sinama-Pongolle signs for Atlético

Posted by atleti on July 3, 2008

Just as Jurado makes his way to Mallorca, Florent Sinama-Pongolle signs a four-year contract with us.

The 23 year old Frenchman, who will play as third choice striker (if we aren’t able to sign Zaragoza’s Ricardo Oliviera), adapted well to Liga after leaving Liverpool for Recreativo de Huelva in 2006.

All in all, not a bad signing. He’s got lots of pace and an eye for goal. A good attacking option, I say.

Overall, I think we’re doing fairly well in the transfer market so far, no?

Any thoughts?
