Jornada 30: Villarreal v Atlético de Madrid

Posted by atleti on March 28, 2008

Anyone remember how our home game against The Yellow Submarine ended earlier this season? Heartbreak.

Here’s the current table (again):
1 Real Madrid  62
2 Barcelona  58
3 Villarreal  56
4 Atlético  50

We aren’t in a position to leap over them in the league table if we win, but a win would still increase our chances of retaining a Champions spot and perhaps leap-frogging them in a future round if they slip up.

STARTING 11: Abbiati; Antonio López, Pablo, Perea, Pernía; Ignacio Camacho, Raúl García, Maxi, Luis García; Forlán and Kun Agüero

SUBS: Leo Franco, Zé Castro, Seitaridis, Cléber, Miguel, Jurado, Mista.

The big loss for us is Simao, who injured himself mid-week.

Their squad list is available, however:
GK: Diego López & Viera.
D: Javi Venta, Gonzalo, Godin, Capdevila, Ángel y Josemi.
M: Josico, Marcos Senna, Pires, Cazorla, Bruno, Mati Fernández, Eguren & Cani.
F: Nihat, Rossi & Tomasson.

Top Scorers:
Nihat 12 goals
Rossi 11 goals

Villarreal’s recent five Liga results:
1-2 away win against Levante
2-0 home win against Zaragoza
1-2 away win against Barcelona
0-0 away draw against Osasuna
1-2 away win against Athletic

Not bad at all, then again, with the exception of Barcelona, they have played some fairly average, mid-table teams. So, truth be told, I’m unimpressed with their current string of results.

In terms of the game, I don’t think it will be a goal-scoring free-for-all like earlier this season. For some reason, I see this being a rather tight affair.

Here’s hoping for a win, either way.

Vamos Atleti!

We can count on Seitaridis and Leo to even start the match, but as told the squad list and the starting 11 is not yet announced.

With respect to the injury of Simao, I am wondering why they had this midweek friendly.

The team is the same as against Sevilla, except that Luis Garcia will take Simao’s place. I would like to see Seiteridis back in the team with Antonio Lopez back to his proper position on the left. Even though Pernia played ok in the last match he is not good under pressure.

Simao is a major loss, but I have faith in Luis’ ability.

I, too, would like to see Seitaridis back in action, even if he only comes in as a sub for this game.

The good news for us is that Guille Franco is injured.

  5. Ram said

That is kind of bad news. He is not a great threat unlike Rossi and Tomasson

  6. atleti said

He’s a big loss because he’s a talisman for Villar.

    And i forgot Nihat

    10 minutes to go!

    perea is a FUCKING IDIOT

Seitaridis opened a big whole in our defence !!

  11. atleti said

Can’t believe this. Oh wait, yes I can. Our defence is shit, as usual.

  12. atleti said

    A full 45 to change things around…PLEASE.

Left comment at halftime but on the previous post:

The injury to Pernia killed us. Villereal owned the left flank after Seitaridis came in and A. Lopez moved over to the left.

Seitaridis looks horrible. On the first goal he was jogging back downfield (Pablo had to cover the flank) and on the second goal he couldn’t find a man to mark.

You can say it was Perea’s mistake on the first goal but that could’ve happened to anybody. The goal should not have even gone through.

We have to play a perfect game against these guys. Villereal is a very good team and it shows.

Let’s see what we can do in the 2nd half. Aguirre – PLEASE bring on Miguel!!!!!!

    Oh how we miss Simao.

  15. Mohammed said

One of the worst performances of this season.

  16. Mohammed said

Without Simao, the team is a ghost. There is no creativity at all.

  17. Leivinha said

We may have made Villereal look better than they are but they are certainly playing well enough to win the league.

possibly the worst atletico game ive seen all year. aside from perea and aguero, no one seemed to play with heart in the last 20 minutes which scares me. we’re down 3-0 and aguero was the only person chasing the ball. unfortunately, his touch was way off today, forlan also played very poorly on the off chance that we finally got the ball to him or aguero. when our defense plays this badly, our offense needs to step it up, and unfortunately we had incredibly bad timing and all our players seemed to have an off day on the same game. we need more passion, more team chemistry, and different defenders (btw how absolutely disgustingly dishonorable was pablo, first he steps on rossi’s back for no reason, then he clearly dove when rossi and him were trying to save a ball from goin out of bounds and almost feigned injury, then he elbows rossi. no class.)

btw I wish Miguel got more playing time, because he’s easily one of my favorite players on atletico after aguero and simao

Seiteridis is not quite match ready, but this match will have helped him. Perea cannot pass the ball he always gives it away. Pablo did well today, but Abbiati really needs to go. Forlan has been off for quite a few games now, his link up play has not been good even though he does work very hard. There was very little service to Aguero and Forlan, Luis Garcia was not good, i would have liked to see Miguel play in his place.
    Let’s hope Racing lose 2morrow.

El At.Madrid ha vuelto a fallar. Perea fatal. Ya sólo podremos ser cuartos, no da para más el equipo rojiblanco. Un abrazo.

I agree with Leivinha and Mohammed. I’m no huge Perea fan but he’s been better lately and that goal wasn’t really his fault. He tried to get a touch on it and had no help. Losing Pernia opened up the left side of the defense and Seiteridis was a disaster. Simao is the one who makes the whole team click. I can’t really blame Abbiati for anything. Maybe someone else gets another save but those goals were not his fault.

  22. atleti said

    Ugh.

Hopefully we’ll get back to winning ways next weekend.

  23. atleti said

And I definitely agree: SIMAO is a crucial component to the team. Without him, we don’t play that well. He adds that extra bit of edge and creativity.

  24. Ram said

Remember we were playing a team which were having a good run off late and we were playing away from home. Yes…we could have done better but these matches will help us to fight more for the next 2 matches where we have the chances of getting all points.

We all know about our defensive woes, but I wish Aguirre had the cojones to take Maxi out or not start him sometimes (like Schuster does with Raul sometimes depending on the situation). Our best midfield line, in my opinion, would be Simao, R. Garcia, Camacho, Miguel de las Cuevas. There was one HORRIBLE pass that Maxi gave that led to the 2nd (or 3rd goal) –can’t remember.

Villareal looked Liga-champion-worthy and they may just make a run for it. After yesterday’s match I can officially say that I am now rooting for Villareal to catch-up to Real Madrid and win the darn thing.

  26. Mohammed said

As I’ve read that we’re going for Gerard Pique (Man U). He’s alright I guess.

He plays as a center back or right back just like Heitinga.

  27. atleti said

I like your idea of trying Camacho & Miguel in the central mid. I think they’d complement each other quite well.

  28. atleti said

Is Pique more a centre-back or fullback? I’ve heard of him, but haven’t seen him play much for United. He was good for Zaragoza when they sent him on loan, I remember.

  29. Mohammed said

He’s more of center back than a fullback, but he has the ability to play in either position. I also know him from his spell at Zaragoza. He was OK.

  30. Ram said

He is quite tall and not so mobile to be a full back. He even played as a defensive mid fielder in few games while at Zaragoza, but I believe that he is better as a center back.

  31. atleti said

Well, just read that REYES insulted Aguirre hence his exclusion from squad lists. Is anyone honestly surprised??
