Truly one of the saddest photos I’ve seen in a long, long time.

Thanks, Cerezo, for continuing to dishonour our club.

    it was on AS yesterday..celebrating his 60th birthday in style. the other one with RM jersey is Villar the RFEF president…how nice

    I know it’s awkward but maybe it was a gift given when all the photographers was there… then he didn’t have chance to not show or anything like that…

    I couldn’t find the explanation on the club’s horrible website. How archaic to have to wait on Flash to load content on the site.

    The photo is simply “ridiculous”. If you receive such a gift from R. Madrid when you are President of the cross town rival (particularly when your club is struggling and your fans are calling for your ouster), you thank them, roll it up and put it away. You don’t turn to the cameras to take a group picture for the whole world to see.

    This photo says a lot. Totally unacceptable. Fuera Cerezo!!!!!!!

    I don’t have time to translate, but if anyone wants.. here it is.

    Con motivo de las diferentes noticias publicadas e interpretaciones que han surgido como consecuencia del obsequio/camiseta que el Presidente del Real Madrid, C.F. D. Ramón Calderón, me hizo entrega la pasada noche, como Presidente del Club Atlético de Madrid quiero manifestar lo siguiente:

    1.Que dentro de las atribuciones que como Presidente tengo asignadas, he de manifestar siempre el máximo respeto hacia los equipos rivales de la competición.

    2. Que me encontraba en calidad de invitado, junto con el Presidente del Real Madrid C.F., y el Presidente de la Real Federación Española de Fútbol, con un grupo de periodistas que periódicamente se reúnen para tratar de forma informal temas de actualidad.

    3. Que en dicho encuentro se me hizo entrega a partir de las doce de la noche de una tarta, con el escudo del Atlético de Madrid que todo el mundo degustó, con motivo de mi cumpleaños, y a continuación, y de forma distendida, D. Ramón Calderón, me hizo entrega de un obsequio, que al abrirlo resultó ser una camiseta personalizada. Ante la sugerencia por parte de los invitados de que me la pusiera, me limité a mostrarla.

    4. Que dicho encuentro, en ningún caso era de carácter público, ni existía ningún reportero gráfico acreditado, por lo que la foto se obtiene de un acto privado que transcurre en un restaurante.

    5. Que en cualquier caso, como Presidente, intento fomentar la cordialidad y la convivencia entre Clubes, pues nuestra rivalidad deportiva no debe proyectarse más allá de la competición.

    6. Me duele la dimensión social que ha adquirido, pues pienso que lo único que genera es crispación social, en ocasiones violencia en las gradas, y en nada contribuye a potenciar y fomentar los valores intrínsecos del deporte, entre ellos el respeto por el rival, y el decoro que debe tener un Presidente con cualquier equipo por muy rival que sea en el terreno de juego.

    7. En cualquier caso, si algún aficionado de nuestro Club no lo percibe de esta forma, y en su derecho está, le pido sinceramente disculpas.

    Official Communiqué

    In order to address the different news articles published and interpretations that have arisen as a consequence of the gift/jersey that the President of Real Madrid, C.F. Mr. Ramón Calderón, gave to me last night, as President of Club Atlético de Madrid, I would like to state the following:

    1. That within the powers bestowed upon me as President, I must always display the maximum respect towards opposing teams in the competition.

    2. That I was a guest, along with the President of Real Madrid C.F. and the President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, of a group of journalists who periodically get together informally to discuss current matters.

    3. That during said encounter, at twelve o’clock at night, I was given a cake for my birthday with the Atlético de Madrid crest, which everyone tasted, and immediately following, and in a relaxed manner, Mr. Ramón Calderón gave me a gift, which, upon opening, I found to be a personalised jersey. Before the suggestion by the other guests that I put it on, I limited myself to displaying it.

    4. That said meeting was under no circumstances of public character, nor was there present any accredited photojournalist, which means that the photograph was obtained during a private ceremony that took place in a restaurant.

    5. That in any case, as President, I try to promote warmth and coexistence between Clubs, as our athletic rivalry should not extend beyond the competition.

    6. The social dimension that this has acquired hurts me, as I think that the only thing that it creates is social tension, and sometimes violence in the stands, and it does not in any way contribute to strengthen and promote the intrinsic values of sport, amongst those, respect for one’s opponent, and the decorum that a President must have with any team, no matter how much of a rivalry there is on the playing field.

    7. In any case, if any fan of our Club does not perceive it in this fashion, and they are in their right to do so, I give them my most sincere apologies.

    The absolute least he could’ve done is not smile at all in the picture. I mean, does he not understand the severity of our rivalry? Did he not see this coming? I hope to God this will be the last straw and that he will be shown the door by the end of the day.

    By the way, for those of you who need translations on the club web site, it has an ‘english’ link in the top right…

    Este sábado hay una convocatoria a las siete de la tarde en la puerta 0 para protestar contra la directiva (Gil y Cerezo). Protestar es algo lícito y legítimo y se hace para mejorar las cosas, independientemente, de que luego no sea así. Protestar es algo propio de culturas avanzadas y de sociedades libres que saben que aceptarlo todo no es aceptable.

    No convoca ningún grupo para que nadie se sienta excluido, convocamos todos y lo único que pedimos es asistencia pacífica. Convocamos a todos los que sienten lástima por nuestra situación deportiva (12 años sin ganar un título) y nuestra situación económica (más de 300 millones de euros reconocidos). A todos los que sienten vergüenza de que nuestro presidente salga en primera plana de un diario deportivo con la camiseta del Madrid, a todos los que quieren que nuestros dirigentes nos escuchen en vez de hacer lo que les da la gana (véase la venta del Calderón)…

    Hemos convocado a los medios de comunicación y a todos los atléticos/as de todas las formas posibles. No se trata de buscar la eficacia de la acción sino la acción misma. Se trata de hacer lo que debemos hacer, independientemente de si somos 50, 100, 200, 500 ó 1500.

    Medita, piensa, reflexiona… y si este no es tu Atleti, si este no es el club que quieres: Ven, grita, exprésate, si no lo haces ahora ¿porqué crees que lo harás después? Sé valiente, el club te necesita.

    Gracias de corazón a toda la gente que está dando su apoyo a esta iniciativa y a todos los atléticos que aman a su club sea cual sea su ideología.
