Jornada 24: Atlético de Madrid v Athletic Bilbao

Posted by atleti on February 16, 2008

Firstly, this game will be televised (en vivo) in the US– 3.00pm, NY time, GolTV.

Secondly, this is a must-win game against a team that is struggling to avoid the drop this season. [At the moment, they’re #15 with 26 points.]

NB: We’ve played them already (0-2 victory); Refresh your memory on that game here and here.

Previous Results for Atleti v Athletic fixture:
06/07 season: 1-0 win for us.
05/06 season: 1-0 win for us.
04/05 season: 1-1 draw.
03/04 season: 3-0 win for us.
02/03 season: 3-3 draw.

We have a fairly good record against them…May lightening strike me dead if we lose or draw this Sunday.

In terms of Athletic’s recent five results:
*1-0 home win against Levante.
*1-0 away loss against Zaragoza.
*3-3 home draw against Racing (Copa)
*1-1 home draw against Barcelona
*2-0 away loss against Racing (Copa)

Not particularly impressive, with the exception of the Barcelona game.

Anyway, here’s Aguirre’s chosen squad so far:

STARTING 11: Abbiati, Antonio López, Pablo, Eller, Pernía, Maxi, Jurado, Raúl, Luis Garcia, Forlán, & Agüero.

SUBS: Falcón, César, Álvaro Domínguez, Miguel, Mista.

Unbelievably, Aguirre is uncertain about who he’ll pair Raúl up with: Cléber or Jurado. The choice seems painfully obviously: JURADO. In terms of the left wing, he’s also uncertain on Reyes or Luis García. Is this some sort of bad joke? LUIS is far more deserving of a starting 11 spot. Shit, I’d sooner pick my 86 year old grandfather than Reyes.

In any case, Aguirre will make his decision tomorrow.

[UPDATE] He has chosen Jurado & Luis!

INJURY LIST: Leo Franco, Seitaridis, Zé Castro, Valera, Motta, Simão.

SUSPENDED: Perea.

Luis & Raúl are back from their respective suspensions, which is great.

New canterano in the squad: César, 18 year old defender. Will he play at all? Probably not. We’re short of defenders at the moment, though, hence his inclusion alongside Dominguez.

Anyway, here’s hoping a big victory…VAMOS ATLETI!

Add me to the injury list :P

Great news that Espanyol have dropped points against Sevilla. Now, we must win to regain our confidence and give Bolton HELL when they arrive at El Calderon.

    3-0 for us!!!

Why can’t the crappy players be injured?

Ya, that Espanyol game was a cracker: 2-4 was the full-time scoreline. Helpful result, without a doubt.

Kun always scores and wins against Athletic! Even though we’re inconsistent, I’m very confident for this match: 2-0

    Agreed 100%.

Villarreal v Racing is 0-0 at the moment. Rossi just missed a penalty. Anything but a Villarreal win would help us out.

We’ll be third if we win.

    Vamos Atleti.

Good to read that Jurado & Luis were selected in the 11.

Nice to take the lead 1-0 w/ perhaps not the prettiest of goals but im not liking this chain of slow lazy play following. It uneases me that whenever we take the lead, we don’t keep playing aggressive and goin for the next goal. Prior to our goal, we were playing so strong, aggressive and exciting…

Unbelievable nonsense and stupidity !!! Why the hell were they going all for the freekick when they were up 1-0 !!

Pablo must leave for 100000000th time.

  10. atleti said

    I can’t believe this. I honestly can’t believe it.

Horrible defending and complacency after we were up by 1-0.

    Motherfucking Pablo. AGAIN.

  11. atleti said

RAUL HAS JUST BEEN SENT OFF…second yellow.

I’m waiting for the lightening to strike me any moment.

  12. atleti said

Pablo should’ve been given a straight red for that blatant elbow to the face.

What a disgrace. Disgusting, dirty player.

Cantalejo is such a son of bitch. Every game for us, he just gets on our nerves.

What a shocking performance when we could been 3rd.

  15. atleti said

I don’t know what was worse, how badly we played or how poorly the ref was. 50/50 both…

    Embarassing, godawful performance.

  16. Armon said

honestly as bad as some of our defense was at times, the ref fucked us once again

-one of their 2 goals was clearly offside
-blatant penalty in our box wasnt called
-2nd yellow was completely bullshit and was thanks to bilbao being feigning bitches
-i am unbelievably furious right now, and having to watch bilbao players raise their hands in victory as if they won the game from class and skill does not help at all
-forlan’s second half play enfuriated me after kun did plenty of work and he would shoot down so many opportunities with a horrible first touch
we are a team that should rightfully be 3rd, i don’t know how much longer i can stomach having to watch us underperform and having to watch refs have it out for us

  17. Mohammed said

By far the worst performance ever. I am shocked and dismayed.

  18. atleti said

    Hmmm, Aguirre to get sacked…?

He can take Pablo, Reyes, Eller, Pernia, Cleber, Mista, etc with him.

  19. day1star said

I don’t think you can blame Aguirre for this defeat, the blame has to go to the players who never seemed to come out of second gear, this was a full strength team barring the injured.
Yes, the ref was awful, but we need to get used to that and stay focussed and not lose our discipline.
I don’t understand what Pablo was doing elbowing Martinez when we were already down to 10 men, that was disgraceful.
I thought that we looked as if our minds were somewhere else, maybe thinking about the Bolton game?
We need to go back to the basics, coz some of our passing was terrible, but our freekicks seem to have improved.
We really should have won this game, very lucky that Espanyol lost.

Looking on the positive side, I thought Jurado looked good. We was able to get the ball on the ground and distribute. That pass that he made to Luis Garcia when he hit the post was brilliant. He is, however, a risk defensively though. Miguel de las Cuevas looked decent too. Also, I thought we were missing Simao big time on the left. Atletic is the type of team that we should have beat, but I think the ref was not helping us. In real Atletic fashion, they were hacks, and every time we dribled by them, they would yank down on someone’s shoulder. Cantalejo, where were the yellow cards in our favor? It’s truly amazing that we’re still in 4th after this last month . . .

I do agree; there were a few positives. The negatives totally outweighed the positives, unfortunately.
