Copa: Valencia v Atlético de Madrid (1st leg)
Posted by atleti on January 23, 2008
Copa Quarterfinal Time.
Aguirre has told the press that the Copa is our ‘#1 priority’, in terms of realistic silverware this season, I suspect. UEFA is probably a close second. The league, of course, is always important.
Reminder: tomorrow’s (Wednesday’s) game will be at 22.00, Spain time. It will be on TV (GolTV channel) for those of us in the US.
STARTING 11: Falcón, Valera, Pablo, Perea, Pernía, Motta. Luis García, Cléber, Maxi, Mista, Agüero.
SUBS: Abbiati, Eller, Miguel, Reyes, Forlán.
Slim pickings due to injuries, unfortunately (Leo Franco, Seitaridis, Raúl García, Simão, Jurado, and Zé Castro).
If you think that’s bad, this Sunday we will be without Maxi and Antonio López due to suspension.
In terms of Valencia, they’re still in full-crisis mode. The problems seem almost endless, with no light at the end of the tunnel. We’re playing away from home, which is never easy, but I still think we should do fine. A win would be perfect. A draw would be OK, but would leave the home leg wide open.
Let’s hope for a good game and positive result.
Plenty of great commentary on the derbi here and elsewhere in the blogosphere. Here’s an excerpt from Helena’s Futblogeras blog (my translation):
“Atleti’s problems aren’t new. We all know about them. The team needs reinforcements and intelligent signings– not a new stadium. Atleti need to shed its mediocrity image/complex, which has been exploited by its owners, and honour its history and supporters.”

We’re now being linked with Tomas Ujfalusi of Fiorentina and Miguel Veloso of Sporting Lisbon, both good players but whether it’s anything more than rumours remains to be seen. Inter it’s said are looking to launch a bid for Aguero, i can’t see that happening.
Someone said that Raul Garcia is a defensive midfielder, he’s not, he’s an attacking midfielder but unfortunatey he’s having to play a defensive role because of the state of our defense.
Today’s game, we must get an away goal or two if possible, so Aguirre in my view needs to play a full strength side at least for the first half.

Ya, I really can’t see Kun leaving at all.
You’re right about Raúl– that’s why he & Motta make a good partnership, because Motta is more defence-minded.

Game’s on same-day tape delay at the bar, so going after work to watch Valencia get creamed.
3-0? 4-0? 5-1? How about 6-0 this time?
By the way, I’m a Valencia fan.

haha! 3-0 Mista hat-trick…
I have to admit, after their 1-0 to los colchoneros, I expected them to improve their play a bit more against Villarreal. Instead, it was another major step backward. That must’ve been painful to watch. Not as painful as the Athletic ass-whipping, though…

Just read somewhere that Reyes will be on the bench…is this the beginning of the end of his time at the club?? Hopefully…

Motta has just been sent off in the 25th minute. I had a feeling this would happen when he received a yellow a few minutes ago.

It looks like we’ll make it to half-time without conceding another goal. Valencia had almost 60% possession.
The guy who refereed our home game against Getafe is the one in charge at the moment: https://atleti.wordpress.com/2007/12/09/jornada-15-atletico-de-madrid-1-getafe-0/

MOTTA’S SECOND YELLOW WAS AN ABSOLUTE JOKE.

Well we defended really well in the second half, and we did well not to concede any more, but it was Pablo at fault again, what was he doing heading the ball straight into the danger area, he’s an experienced fullback, his mistakes have cost us two games now.

Goddamn it Pablo!! >.<

This sunday the starting team is going to be awful! If we win, we will get to go to champions at the end for sure! If we loose, don’t loose hope, it’s the only thing we will always have!
