Copa del Rey: Valladolid 1 Atlético de Madrid 1

Posted by atleti on January 16, 2008

We’re into the quarterfinals. No one picked up any injuries. Motta played a full 90 for the first time this season. Mission Accomplished! What else is there to say?

Falcón; Valera, Perea, Pablo Ibáñez, Pernía; Raúl García, Motta, Luis García (Maxi 64’), Reyes (Simão 54’); Kun Agüero (Cléber 82’) & Forlán.

48′ Agüero (assist by Luis)

Ah, we were very lucky the ref didn’t award them a penalty when the scoreline was 1-1…

They better not do that shit against Re*l.

Moving on…

Motta, Mister Fragile: “I feel good. My knee has responded perfectly…and I feel happy about that. But, above all, I feel happy because the team has [made it the quarterfinals]…”

The rest of his interview is about the derbi, which he says the team are now completely focused on. As he puts it, they have four days to relax and prepare themselves for it.

So, that’s that.

Now onto the derbi!

As a side note, as all of you know by now, Aguirre has said that the club won’t consider signing new players in the transfer window until after the derbi. Some names being tossed around by various media sources: Albelda, Benfica’s Katsouranis and Liverpool’s Sissoko. We’re also linked to Werder Bremen’s Borowski. What do you think?

In any case, expect derbi blog entry soon enough!

Albelda cannot play for another Spanish team till this season end.
Borowski has signed an agreement with Bayern and he will be joining them as a free agent in the summer.

Thanks for sharing! I knew the Albelda bit, but I had no idea that Borowski has signed for Bayern.

I just read now that Katsouranis will apparently stay with Benfica until the summer. I don’t know much about him, though, except his spat with another player on that squad.

  3. Sissoko is a defensive midfielder, I don’t think that he is a good player for Atlético. We need another kind of player.

Atlético is in QF. La Copa del Rey is very important this year for us.

  4. The Quarter final draw is much more important than Sunday Match. Yes, it´s vs Real Madrid, but only Barcelona and perhaps Villarreal are stronger than us, and they play between themselves for a place in semi final draw. If we are smart we should play harder in Copa games. It´s an affordable title.

If we want to be in a champions league spot at the end of the season, then Sundays match is equally important, we can’t afford to lose and give Espanyol and Villareal ground, we have to go for the win. Since our first match against Valencia is away, we should try to get a goal or two and then close the game down, but any way that you look at it the next 2-3 weeks are going to be very important and we need to stay focussed and motivated, I’m sure we will succeed.

  6. That´s right. But Atlético needs to win at least one title, and Copa is the easiest way to do that. If we win Copa del Rey the Uefa cup qualify is automatic and season would become worthwhile in only 5 matches. The physical status of the team is not the best now and perhaps Atlético should be better focusing their efforts in two competitions. And we need a midfielder even if we win all in this month.

Maybe in that case we should concentrate on winning the Uefa Cup coz that gives automatic qualification to the Champions League, which is what we should be aiming for. If we don’t end up in the Champions League next season, then what’s the point of spending all that money. And we need one good defender a really good defensive midfielder to act as cover for Motta and another good striker.

I agree with everyone’s points: each competition is important in its own way. I really feel that we can win the Copa this season, IF we play full-strength squads.

This Sunday is important– if we can take anything out of the game (whether it be a point or 3 points) that would be incredible for Champions League aspirations. Not to mention pride.

UEFA is a tricky competition to crack because we’re up against teams we don’t play against on a regular basis. Each game is a bit of an unknown.

I don’t understand why we’d have to pick and choose competitions. There’s no reason we can’t be equally focused and motivated in the derby and uefa and the copa, so let’s do it because we definitely have the talent. And as far as getting an extra striker, I was thinking about that but after summer we’ll have braulio back and the ghana striker should be eligible by then, no? As far as getting one between now and summer, I think that would be a waste though we have the current need, we don’t have the long-term need. We definitely need a solid defensive mid as well as a consistent and solid defender. Can’t wait till the weekend!

Ya- there’s no reason why we shouldn’t give it our all on all 3 competitions.

We did not need more players. The young people (from “Cantera”) are enough. We must trust in the club’s young people. We must not looking for outside the one that is in the club.

Definitely agreed– we need to use the canteranos more often. They’re an untapped resource and they are quite a few that are very good.
