UEFA: Atlético de Madrid v Panathinaikos

Posted by atleti on December 19, 2007

Reminder: It’s tomorrow, Thursday. The final group stage fixture.

UEFA’s article on the game is informative, as always.

STARTING 11 (confirmed on the official website): Abbiati; Perea, Zé Castro, Eller, Antonio López; Raúl García, Cléber Santana, Luis García, Maxi; Forlán and Kun Agüero.

SUBS: Falcón; Pernía; Reyes; Miguel; Mista; Pablo; Simão.

Honestly, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t win Panathinaikos.

1- We’re playing at home.

2- Our starting lineup is strong.

3- Panathinaikos tend to struggle when they play away from home.

If this isn’t a recipe for a win, I don’t know what is! So, yes, I 100% expect Atleti to collect the 3 points. By doing so we’ll top the group & avoid a Champions League loser. A draw would only benefit the Greeks…

Aguirre on the game:
“I sense good things coming from my team. In the UEFA Cup and at home we’ve been a serious squad, we come out quickly for the matches… [Panathinaikos] are a great team, they have some forwards who control the ball well. They’re a squad that unfolds their play perfectly…It’s fundamental for us to finish as group leaders for the match-ups in the next round. We’re not scared of anybody, but it would be better if we could play an opponent of a lesser level…But I think that we’ll arrive at this match feeling fresh, and then we’ll see who plays against Espanyol.”

So, that’s that.

It won’t be on TV, unfortunately, so I’ll follow it via Internet, like a lot of other folks.

GROUP B (at the moment)
Panathinaikos 9
Atlético 7
København 3
Lokomotiv Moskva 2
Aberdeen 1

RUMOUR MILL
A Bola has suggested that Maniche might leave in January, as he is attracting strong interest in England & Italy. It also claims OPorto & Bayern Munich might be interested in his services. It’s a VERY vague rumour, but it’s worth noting since, at some point, we will be keen on bringing in a more creative midfielder.

Speaking of which, 2 more weeks until the transfer window opens. Aguirre & Co have mentioned times & time again that no new players will be brought in. So, I’m not expecting much. Perhaps they’re only considering loan or free transfers at this. We’ll have to wait & see.

Reminder: Maniche’s contract ends at the end of the season. According to reports, he might not want to leave in January as it might jeopardise his spot in the Portugal NT (EURO ’08).

  1. hi!
i like auero a lot. i think he’s as good as messi. unfortunately, aguero is well exposed by the media. btw, can i exchange link with this blog?

the suggestion is that otherwise he will leave on a free next summer (signed on a 2 year contract to begin with?)

now that his form has improved considerably they should offer a contract extension, it seems unlikely that a significantly better player can be signed at a reasonable in fee in january, and even if it does happen (arteta?) then maniche should still stay since he and raul garcia are the only trustworthy cm’s (jurado hasn’t cut it consistenly)

the wide midfielders are all entirely attack-minded and having a playmaker (like riquelme who was considered last summer, or nasri, diego, van der vaart) alongside them would leave a fairly porous midfield

something like this could work, 4-2-3-1

    ____________aguero____________

    simao _____(playmaker)_____maxi

    _____raul garcia___maniche______

a fluid attack without an orthdodox cf, now aguero is scoring as often as forlan AND contributing to setup play

    @ European Football Blog: Sure!

@Nuni: Thanks for the comment, you bring up some very interesting ideas & points.

I like that lineup, but what about Forlán? I consider him an important piece to the puzzle. He & Kun have a great partnership upfront– I would be hesitant to throw that to the side.

Ideally, I’d love Arteta to join Atleti sooner than later. Perhaps in 08/09 or 09/10.

Isn’t Jurado more of a winger than a central midfielder?

You are right about Maniche: with a true playmaker, he can continue to work alongside Raúl.

    I’m starting to believe you…

I’m waiting for Rojadirecta to upload them. This thread was started on their forum, but they have yet to upload Atleti’s two goals.

What a goal !!! what a perfect finish by Simao from the free kick! Now, I know why he was “El Capitao” at Benfica.

Aguirre began the game with an unnecessary caution. I think we could’ve won this one with ease, but he had to go and make it a drama. Fortunately, it ended with a happy ending. Aguero wasn’t in his best form, I thought.

Reyes played a very good game and added more edge to the attack.

Today, I saw something new in the team; a fighting spirit. Fighting for the ball to the last second of the game and to top that, we were rewarded for it.

Unfortunately, we lost the services of Raul and Luis Garcia for the next game in the UEFA cup.

  16. Leivinha said

Oh well, that’s why we have a deep bench and hopefully Motta will be back by then. I heard there were lots of empty seats at the Calderon which surprises me since this was a game for 1st place in the group…their (the fans) loss i guess.

  17. atleti said

Yeah, that was a shame to read. I think only 12,000-15,000 folks showed up. I guess it’s because it was a weekday game, hm?

  18. day1star said

When we play pretty defensive teams which are well organized it’s very difficult for the forwards because of the lack of space, so all things considered and from everything i’ve read Aguero had an alright game. And i’m very proud of the team for the fighting spirit that they showed in this match first to come from behind and then in the dying seconds to win the game, we really didn’t have that last year.
Next up Espanyol, let’s finish this season on a high, so we can have really great holidays.

    Aupa Atleti.

  19. Luis said

Simão wasn’t known as ‘El Capitao’ :( (i know that i’m portuguese)

btw, you can always check the goals on tvgolo.com (sorry for the spam)

Thanks, LUIS, that’s a great site to watch mini-recaps of the games.
