Jornada 16: Recreativo 0 Atlético de Madrid 0

Posted by atleti on December 16, 2007

Atleti maintain a Champions spot, but miss a golden opportunity to distance themselves from #4 Villarreal.

TACTICS: Abbiati; Perea, Pablo, Eller, Pernía; Maxi, Raúl García, Cléber, Simão (Reyes 66’); Forlán and Kun Agüero (Luis García 66’)

Simply put, this was the game of two goal-keepers. Both Italians, Sorrentino & Abbiati, gave solid performances.

Recre had a few good opportunities. Atleti had better opportunities & dominated play for significant portions.

Forlán, it must be said, had a good game & was truly unlucky not to have scored a goal for his efforts.

MOVING ON…The substitutions seemed off to me. I was surprised to see Simão come off for Reyes, since the Portuguese winger was playing fairly well. Kun, in my opinion, should have stayed on…how else are we supposed to find a winning goal if we take out one of our strikers? Thirdly, Pernía & Cléber didn’t look particularly inspiring. Pernía was rather sloppy while Cléber simply has no presence in the midfield. Why not take out Cléber for Miguel?

Anyway, the result is another set-back. It’s discouraging to drop points against the likes of Recre, Murcia, Almeria…

I don’t know what to else to say…I’m disappointed.

Upwards & onwards, always.

Next up: home to Panathinaikos (UEFA) on the 20th & home to Espanyol (LIGA) on the 23rd.

    Hello..

Yeah.. disappointing game.. I prefered so much Riquelme instead of Cleber.. And someone said Riquelme didn’t come because Cléber did… That’s sad.. Who said he’s that good? =/
Less 2 points.. but.. that’s the 3rd match our defense didn’t allow a goal.. despite all that nonsense against Getafe..

Now we have to win Espanyol..

Espanyol will be a tough opponent at home. I’ve seen some of their games this season.

Hello guys, i’ve just recently found myself an Atléti supporter.
I went to Vicent Calderón to see the great match against Villareal (too bad about the result…) and in the end Atlético had become my second favorite club (right next to the one back home).

Anyway, i’m also disappointed with the last match – Aguirre’s substitutions tend to enhance that feeling actually – but i think we have what it takes to beat Espanyol.

    Cheers

Thanks for leaving the comment, Hal!

I agree that sometimes Aguirre’s substitution choices are disappointing.

I, too, think we have what it takes to win Espanyol, so long as the team remain focused.

    chau!

  5. Hi my Friend. I’m very sad because you don’t visit my blog.
This week is very important to get to Christmas in Champions.
Too they should win in UEFA for finish first of group and avoid to Champions’s team.

    Bye!!

“A tie is a good result” said Aguirre. I don’t agree (even if it was an AWAY game)…..not if you have Champions League aspirations AND you are playing against a WEAK Recre team: they are far from being the exciting revelation from last year when they were managed by the departed Marcelino.

On substitutions, I am NOT surprised at all by Aguirre’s moves yesterday. He is quite predictable. No element of surprise or experiment in his changes to affect a more positive outcome for the game (like bringing in a young Miguel off the bench or something along those lines).

Sorry, Jose: It’s been a hectic month for me (holidays, travel, & all that!). I read your blog, but don’t comment as frequently!

    Thanks for your comment, always.

I would’ve preferred Aguirre to roll the die differently: like he did against Sevilla, where he went all out for the win with attack-minded substitutions.

day1star made a good point in the previous entry: he could have kept Kun on, & subbed in Mista, along with Luis & Miguel.

Aguirre is the “play it safe” kind of coaches. He does not take risks. This kind of mentality does not win you trophies. “Fortune favors the brave” as they say.

Thanks for your commentaries in my blog and thanks for the link. I also have linked your web page in the “pobreatleti”. I think that Aguirre didn’t it so badly, Perhaps Mista would have played but it wasn’t important.

The team was better than recreativo, but we hadn’t luck.

Sorry for don’t say more things but my english language is horrible.

Aguero has been named Fifa under 20 player of the year or alternatively Fifa young player of the year.
