Jornada 11: Atlético de Madrid 3 Villarreal 4

Posted by atleti on November 4, 2007

I’m absolutely disgusted, stunned, and embarrassed by this loss. Our defence destroyed the hard work of our attack each and every time we took the lead. Who, specifically, was at fault? Leo Franco, Perea, Pablo, and Pernia. ESPECIALLY Leo Franco and Perea. Suicidal defending, lacking confidence & losing focus too often.

Day1star mentioned (in the below entry) that we need defensive midfielders– a very good point. I say the sooner we get Motta back from injury the better. At this point, we’re leaking far too many goals. We play several more games before January– all must-win fixtures– and we simply can’t afford to concede these sloppy goals.

Our priority in January should be to repair the defence. No more attacking players, for the love of God– we are perfectly OK in the goal-scoring department.

Not to go without blame: ATROCIOUS penalty miss by Maxi. I expect much better from our captain. Simply unacceptable. I dare say that was the turning point. We are now left to wonder what would have happened had he did score it.

GOALS
09′ Pablo (fantastic interplay between Simao-Pernia-Pablo)
24′ Simao (Brilliant strike, absolute golazo!)
30′ Rossi (due to Rossi outpacing Pablo & Perea)
41′ Fuentes (slopping play by Leo Franco, putting Raul in a difficult position)
61′ Agüero (great game for the little Argentine)
69′ Nihat (the fault of Perea)
89′ Nihat (no one was marking Nihat AT ALL)

ALL FOUR GOALS WERE DEFENSIVE ERRORS. We gifted them the 3 points. SUICIDAL DEFENDING.

Leo Franco; Seitaridis; Perea; Pablo; Pernía; Raúl García; Maniche; Reyes (76′ Luis Garcia); Simao (76′ Jurado); Maxi; Agüero

Why did Aguirre wait so long to make substitutions? Why did he remove Simao, who was having a brilliant game, instead of Maxi?

The Positives
It’s difficult to NOT end in a negative note because of the manner in which we lost. That said, great game for Simao & Kun. Easily our best players on the pitch. Simao terrorised the left side of the pitch during the 1st half and continued to impress in the 2nd half. He was absolutely lethal with free kicks & corners AND  he worked quite well with kun.

Next Up:  Home to newly-promoted Valladolid. MUST WIN.

AUPA ATLETI. BENDITA LOCURA.

The problem Atleti as i see it is that we have no prescence in the back four, in other words no solid defender to command and hold the back four together and give them confidence, which is why i suggested Demichelis, he has prescence on the field, is solid and experienced. We play with two wingers who get caught out of position, and the central defenders are not confident, they have a tendency to panic resulting in our conceding goals.

  2. atleti said

Exactly; we need two new central defenders. We need to let go of Eller & Ze Castro/Pablo/Perea in January. At least two of them must be shown the exit.

I don’t think I can take much more of this.

  3. atleti said

Motta’s services are desperately needed, too. It’s so frustrating that he’s still not fully recovered.

  4. day1star said

If we can’t get Biglia then i would go for Banega, will be a great player and also will link up well with Aguero.

  5. atleti said

Is Biglia a true defensive midfielder? That’s my one worry at the moment.

  6. day1star said

Yes, but he’s also good at going forward, the same as Banega, Gago and Mascherano. But, it’s no good having a dm playing if the four at the back are crap. Raul Garcia is not actually a dm, neither are the rest of our midfielders even though they are required to go back and defend. The only dm in our first team squad is Motta and he’s injured.

  7. atleti said

If no defensive changes are made in January, I will be shocked.

  8. day1star said

We’re actually playing a very attacking game, the problem is though that when we attack the central two defenders are being exposed on counterattacks and they are too far forward. So, to play such a game we must needs have a better defence or play with two def. midfielders.

  9. atleti said

That’s what Aguirre said– that we’re playing incredibly offensive and, as a result, lacking ‘equilibrium’ and ‘organisation’ in the back-line.

    They’re rubbish defenders, though.

  10. day1star said

I personally would get rid of our present scouts as they are rubbish, couldn’t understand why we signed either Eller or Santana.

  11. day1star said

When we went 2-0 up we should have changed to a defensive formation until half-time. Then in the second half we should have come out attacking for the firsat 20-25 minutes then reverted back to a defensive formation to soak up all counter attacks.

  12. day1star said

Well he’s said pretty much the same as me.

What would you say to Makelele making a return to Madrid?

He`s not going to be a regular starter at Chelsea anymore ,why not make an offer in January?

I am fan spanish of At.Madrid. I live in Madrid. I saw the match. The defend is very bad. Leo Franco, the goalkeeper, calificated with a 0. Un saludo desde España

I’ve managed to calm myself down a bit. There’s light at the end of the tunnel: we play Valladolid, Betis, Getafe, and Recreativo next (in that order).

These are teams that we should win- no ifs, ands, or buts.

Makelele? Another ex-Mandril player? Surely there are other options!

  16. atleti said

    Un saludo, Fernando!!

Atleti, I think the team made you so upset that you forgot that our next game is away against Almeria [not home to Valladolid]

Anyway, I agree with everything you’ve said. I suggest Mikael Silvestre, he’s a good defender and Man united aren’t using him much these days. But what’s the use anyway, our scouts will bring the same kind of stupid defenders we have now. Nothing is going to change unfortunately. I’m not losing hope though.

  18. Ringo said

I WAS being serious ,for a change ,I thought that was a good idea ,but I guess not.

Anyway ,for what it’s worth ,this Chelsea supporter is now an Atletico fan.
    AUPA!

How many games till january? We’ve got to hold out til then b4 we can do anything about the defence. I’m still disgusted we lost a won match, how bad does that say we are defensively, pretty bad. The only bright side to look at is that most of the rest of the games til January are against opponents who don’t have prolific attacks.

As people suggesting, Motta might be the fix. Maniche and Raul though playing well are not defensive midfielders by nature and Motta can come in as a sub later in the games to give the stability. Also he can play in the central defense which would help a lot given the form of all the central defenders.

How about Lopo who is with Deportivo now? He was playing well with Espanyol before making that move to Depor. Also Coloccini from Depor could be considered.

  21. atleti said

Glad to have you aboard, RINGO- buckle up, it’s always a bumpy ride!

You’re right, Mohammed- I forgot about our away game to Almeria!

day1star: 6 Liga games, 3 UEFA games before January. Here’s hoping we learn from the defensive errors & get Motta back soon.

  22. atleti said

Bad news: Raul fractured a bone in his nose. He can’t play in our next game anyway: he’ll be serving a suspension.

  23. day1star said

Forget Coloccini, he’s as bad as the ones we’ve got now makes too many defensive errors. Garay looks good and he wants to move from Racing.

  24. Armon said

finally saw the game after recording it… now wishing i didnt. all i hope is that our horrid defense doesnt scare out our future superstars (mainly aguero) in a similar fashion as torres

i honestly think im a better defender than perea

    i want to cry

welcome to the world of atletico, ringo, make sure you have a box of napkins with you at all times

  25. Linda said

Garay would be a great buy, but what concerns me is that your list of those who defended badly is almost the entire defence. There’s a lot that needs fixing back there, and good defenders don’t come cheap these days.

  26. atleti said

I’d sooner have my 86 year old grandfather as a defender than Perea.

Yes, that’s the saddest part in all of this, Linda: they’re all dreadful (with the exception of maybe Valera; he hasn’t had any time to play since returning from injury). I wouldn’t lose any sleep if we got rid of them all. Having said that, it’s unrealistic. I think if we can offload Eller and Ze Castro (who are the morons that would want them?), we can bring in two new central defenders. Wishful thinking, on my part? Probably.
