Jornada 10: Atlético de Madrid 4 Sevilla 3

Posted by atleti on October 31, 2007

Atlético climb to 4th in the league table after scoring four brilliant goals!

Leo Franco; Seitaridis, Perea, Zé Castro, Pernía; Raúl García, Maniche, Maxi (Jurado, 88’), Luis García (Simão, 58’); Kun Agüero; Forlán (Reyes, 23’)

FORLAN was subbed out in the 23′ with an injury. More on that if it is severe.

01′ Maniche (assist by Maxi)
14′ Fabiano (result of a free kick)
16′ Agüero (assist by Forlán)
44’Zé Castro (disastrous og)
69′ Maxi Rodríguez (assist by Agüero)
90′ Jurado (assist by Simão)
92’Fabiano (absolute loss of concentration)

ATLETI: 9 shots, 8 on goal.
SEVILLA: 11 shots, 3 on goal.

Words cannot describe how good I feel at this moment. Not only does the win put us in a Champions League spot (with two points separating us from Valencia), but we are only 5 points away from the top.

Of course, it wasn’t complete bliss: it was another tale of two Atléticos. On one hand, our attack fills me such hope, pride, & happiness. Indeed, we are in incredible goal-scoring form. We have speed, technical ability, and, more importantly, OPTIONS on the bench to reinforce our offence (although we do lack a fit 3rd striker). KUN & Forlán are undoubtedly the best strike force in Liga at the moment. Fantastic game for Maxi, in particular, too.

On the other hand, our defence is still incredibly unreliable, costing us goals. Zé Castro had a disastrous performance, for the most part: not only did he score an own goal, but he also lost possession in dangerous areas. He is not the only one at fault either– we conceded unnecessary free kicks, one of which led to Sevilla’s first goal. Pernía, Seitaridis, Leo Franco, and Perea— all incredibly shaky– you never know when they’re going to have a [relatively] good day or an absolute shocker. There is no sense of security. What’s the good of having the best attack in Liga when we’re leaking goals with suicidal defending?

This is the paradox of Atleti.

At the end of the day, I’m absolutely thrilled that we secured another crucial win.

Next up: home to VILLARREAL.

This game very much shows the change in mentality. In last few seasons we would have lost or drew in such a tough match, but we kept fighting till the end and the players showed faith and confidence in their abilities, something that we were very much lacking in the old Atletico. Also, the crowd were great. They believe in the team now unlike last season.

There is a big problem in our defensive line; the players seem to rush into tackling the opponent instead of thinking where the ball is going.

That was as entertaining a game as I’ve seen in a long time. Needlessly close, maybe…but fun to watch. It was the first time I’ve seen the squad this year. GOl TV is saying they’ll have Sunday’s came…we can only hope. Castro’s form on the OG was nice. Maybe he could be the missing striker. Pernia is nuts – the way you like when he’s on your team but you’d hate him if he wasn’t.

I agree, you can see the change in mentality. The attacking was consistent and confident and I was so glad that Maxi had a great game. The way the crowd praised him as he left the field was nice to see. I’m crossing my fingers that they will use the upcoming transfer window to do something about our defense. It’s terrible to have the lead and be worried that your defense is going to give it away at any moment.

What a great win! It inspires me to sing … ;)

The belief is in the team.

Great to hear that Sunday’s game will be on TV! I’m off Sunday.

BAD NEWS: FORLAN will be out for 2-3 weeks. If ever we needed a 3rd striker, it was now.

This victory is a huge confidence builder for the team.

When a young guy like Jurado (1st goal in 1st division play) can come off the bench and score a very important & beautiful goal against Sevilla at the end of regulation….that’s huge!

Our injury list is mounting but when a team has confidence and is starting to develop a winning attitude, this can be overcome through team unity, confidence and will to win.

With Forlan hurt, would still be nice to have had Braulio to go to as a back-up striker or even Diego Costa who is very young but looked good in pre-season (although I know they didn’t have a spot for non EU player).

To be in 4th place after the 10th week is sweet!!!!!!

Is it possible to bring Braulio back into the squad in January? Or, is he stuck at Getafe for the entire season?

Good question but typically these loans are for at least a year. He scored a nice goal against Tottenham but I didn’t see him in the line-up for their victory earlier this week.

Brilliant game, best of the round for me. Kun and Maxi were awesome. The defensive problems do remain, though.

Hmmm, now I’m very curious if there is a clause in Braulio’s loan contract that would allow him to return! I hope he’s not injured.

It was a great game, particularly the beginning and towards the end. Quality goals all round.
