Jornada 7: Barcelona 3 Atlético Madrid 0

Posted by atleti on October 7, 2007

The photo says it all really.

After a truly promising start, we went down a goal after a sloppy clearance by Abbiati, which allowed Deco to tap in  #1. Shambolic goalkeeping at it’s best. After that point, we lost focus and Barcelona played their game. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this was always going to be a tough game for us. It’s not so much the loss, but the manner in which we lost that’s the difficult pill to swallow.

It’s difficult to come away with any positives from this performance beyond the first 20 minutes. Kun missed a golden opportunity to put us ahead before the 1st goal. As one article puts it, “El ‘Kun’ no apareció. Messi sí.” Maniche was ineffective in central midfield.  Few bright moments for Simao and Reyes. Defence, especially Abbiati, cost us the game.  We lost our rhythm and didn’t look like we could get back into it.

Aguirre’s tactics: Abbiati; Seitaridis; Pablo; Zé Castro (45′ Eller); Pernía; Maniche; Raúl García; Simao; Reyes (54′ Maxi); Agüero (62′ Luis Garcia); Forlán

Aguirre gives Luis Garcia such little playing time in Liga. Besides that, why did he replace Luis with Kun? If Kun is fit, there’s no reason to substitute him out, especially when we are down by 2 goals. Granted, he wasn’t having a good game, but I always feel it’s important to maintain two strikers.

Not much else to say.

Disappointing result, but not the end of the world.

Next up: home to Real Zaragoza.

Our defense was shaky I admit, but I was embarassed by the unwillingness of any of our players to attack barcelona’s defenders. You can only cross it in and hope for a header or something for so long. I’m pretty sure the only player to not back down from a defender and look for a longball was Simao when he split two defenders but then got his foot kicked by puyol. Aside from Abbiati’s incredibly shaky goalkeeping (particularly in the first half) I actually didn’t think our defense did THAT bad. While watching the teams though, I was totally envious of barcelona’s ability to always know what’s on the other’s mind. Atletico would have some players make runs but no one saw it or expected it in time to make a play. I felt like we needed some sort of playmaker w/ 1 on 1 technical ability to help open space when there is none (after all, that is basically what Messi does). If only we had Zidane! He’s STILL amazing!

Agreed 100%: It was always going to be a difficult task for the defence to hold back Barcelona’s attack. Still, I think the we’re lacking in a top quality centre-back.

I also think we need a playmaker. We lacked a creative edge in the midfield. Who is available? Too bad Arteta is attached to Everton. I’ll pass on Zidane– great player, but ultimately Mandril trash.

Motta should be back soon. Perhaps he’d work better than Maniche, if given an opportunity. It’s a shame he’s so fragile, though.

The truth is, if we bring in a playmaker, we’d have to get rid of Cleber. I still don’t understand why he & Eller were brought in–average players occupying crucial extracommunitarian spots.

Now, that i have calmed down and watched the game again, this is my take. Abbiati cost us that game, there is no doubt about that, we lost all confidence in ourselves after the first goal went in. Subsequently Barcelona scored the second.
We then sort of got ourselves together. It was always going to be a hard match, but we should have done a lot better. We let them play and gave them lots of room, you can’t afford to do that against Barcelona. They are the best team in La Liga at the moment.
The first substitution was fine but i thought the second was wrong, he should have taken off Maniche not Aguero.
Neither Forlan or Aguero were in the game because there was no real service to them. It’s a shame Atletico didn’t buy Riquelme he is a true visionary and his passing is exceptional we could have really done with him today.
But lookng on the bright side this was the hardest match we’ll play this year until the Barca home game. We should win most if not nearly all of the rest of our games.

We don’t have adequate covering for Riquelme, I think. His main weakness is that he can’t defend and needs two defensive midfielders. He’s a brilliant player with limitations; surely we need a more complete central midfielder than him?

Maniche doesn’t add much creativity and shouldn’t be used in his current role, but we have no other alternatives at the moment.

You’re right about our upcoming fixtures, we should pick up the pieces & return to winning ways.

I don’t see that as a problem, to me you need three hard working midfielders behind him whose duties are both offensive and defensive. And if you saw Riquelme in the Copa America or the Copa Libertadores then you can see that he’s changed his game somewhat, he tracks back now. The other thing is he’s a freekick specialist and a great corner taker, so our set pieces wold have been more effective. He is one of the greatest attacking midfielders around at the moment. He creates and scores goals.

Unless Aguirre is sacked, I just can’t see him coming to Atleti. I rate him highly, but he’s too temperamental.

Fair play to Atletico – and I don’t think you guys were really outmatched. It is common for teams that come to Camp Nou to lose their ambition, particularly when they concede.

Totally agree with you on the need to shore up the defence and get a playmaker, from what I’ve seen of Atletico this season.

(On an Argentina-related note, how about that Leo Messi? By the way, I’ve taken over management at the Argentina World Cup Blog. :D)

Belluschi was one of the players that Atletico put their eyes on, but unfortunately nothing happened. I think he will be the perfect man to replace Maniche at the central midfied position. He’s good at both ends, offence and defence.

Linda, you’re the perfect person to take charge of that blog!

Agreed 100%, Mohammed! Belluschi is a very talented player (I’ve seen him play many, many times)- he would be an incredible addition to the squad. If he qualifies for dual citizenship through his family, then he is going to attract many clubs this coming transfer window.

Weird! I’m sure the message is in one of the filters. Hopefully the admin (Bob?) will find it.

Thanks for visiting the blog, again! Excuse my Spanish!

I think the substitutions should have been made earlier, although I really can’t come up with a winning formula when I look at how we played versus how Barca played. The second goal really kicked the wind out of us and we didn’t come back until very late, and even then, it wasn’t convincing. As you said, disappointing but the not the end of the world.

I hope they are thinking about bringing in a playmaker. From what I’ve seen so far, despite all the talent we have on the pitch, without a key playmaker, our results will be inconsistent and will cost us in the long term.

(On a side note, the media is focused on Messi’s goal and Ronaldinho’s return, but for my money, Puyol was the man of the match. He had an excellent game.)
