Welcome aboard, Motta.

Posted by atleti on September 3, 2007

25 year old Brasilian midfielder Thiago Motta was officially presented today as the newest member of the rojiblanco family. Don Enrique Cerezo described him as a “[versatile] footballer with [plenty of] experience”

Some words from the ex-Barcelona man (after his 1st training with the squad):

I saw an extraordinary atmosphere in the dressing room and I think that is important because over the past few years I have learned that a good environment amongst the players is transferred to the pitch and helps you acheive so much.

My aim is to help my team-mates and the coach, so I want to start and adapt to the club and the players as soon as possible to be able to contribute as much as I can and achieve great things with this team.

He is expected to debut in our next game, away to new boys Murcia. It’ll be interesting to see how Aguirre utilizes him then.

[As a side note, he is a new member to our ever-growing Portuguese-speaking contingent: Maniche, Simao, Ze Castro, Cleber, and Eller).

Injury News
suffered an injury on his right thigh on Sunday and will be undergoing physical therapy. UPDATE: He will not travel with the Argentina squad to play that friendly against Australia on 11-September.

Abbiati has been removed from Italy’s EURO 2008 squad because he was deemed unfit by Italian physios. I’d personally love to see him play Liga games in place of Argentine Leo Franco. He’s an experienced goalkeeper; in all the games that he has played for the club, he has been solid. Leo Franco’s goalkeeping frightens me at times– he seems almost scatter-brained.

I watch EPL, but very casually. I’ll have a look at your blog.

I think as the season progresses Abbiati will get more games than Franco. Heard that he was shaky during the derby match with the crosses and Abbiatti was doing good with the pre-season and UEFA qualifying matches.

Yeah, I hope so. He has won over a lot of supporters with his pre-season performances, looking solid & confident.

I think he will play against Murcia.

I think Aguirre will make at least three changes to the side that drew against Mallorca: Reyes and maybe Luis Garcia (if Maxi isn’t fit enough). Abiatti, maybe, if he’s fit. Plus, maybe he’ll include Motta in the starting 11, which means Maniche will sit on the bench. That isn’t a bad idea since Maniche and Simao are participating in Portugal’s EURO qualifier, so that’ll rest them a bit.
