Pernia Apologises to Supporters

Posted by atleti on September 3, 2007

After scoring yesterday’s equaliser, Pernia ran over to an area of Atleti supporters and covered his ears,  a gesture to express his anger over the whistles and jeers by the home support.

Today, he apologised:

We did not deserve the whistles. We were fighting hard to come back into the game…The team has turned around and we managed to take something from the game…There is plenty of time, but this is only the start. Now we have to work to silence the critics.

My response? YES, PLEASE. Don’t you think we want to be silenced? We are desperate– ravenous even– for a bit of happiness after so many years of frustration and no silverware. Good grief. We need to make el Vicente Calderón a fortress- a place where away sides have a difficult time leaving with anything. That’s precisely how we lost so many points last season: one too many draws at home.

We need our biggest splurges (Kun, Forlan, Simao, Reyes, even Maxi) to ‘step up to the plate’ with goals, to take their chances better.

Manager Aguirre also made some post-game comments:

…I think our team needed to show spark in the second half, but instead we seemed a bit sluggish. We need to analyse and repair these small details.

It’s too late to invest in a playmaker now, so we need to make do with what we have– and on paper, we have a very good set of attack-minded players. On the pitch, they need to step up their performances and win us games. With the amount spent, it would be a complete travesty to not have a top 6 finish this season.

Yes, I know we’re only in round 2, but I’m worried.
