Jornada 2: Atlético Madrid 1 RCD Mallorca 1

Not much to say, really. I’m disappointed and frustrated.
We went down a goal in the 18th minute after Guiza took advantage of some woeful defending. We managed to score an equaliser in the 77th minute thanks to Pernia (who was otherwise mediocre during most of the game). We were denied a clear penalty by the ref (a foul on Kun).
The missing piece to the team? A playmaker similar to Everton’s Mikel Arteta. I quite like the Basque midfielder’s style and think that’s the type of player we need in our midfield. (Again, not him, but someone with a similar style.) Despite new additions Forlan, Simao, Reyes, Raul Garcia, et al– we still lack ‘ideas’. A midfield maestro.
The one highlight: another consistently good performance by Raul Garcia.
Our defence still leaves much to be desired, of course.
80 million spent…and only 1 point so far this season.
Lamentable.

Thanks! If you read the blog, you’ll definitely learn more about Liga (well, at least from an Atleti supporter’s viewpoint, anyway ; ) Mallorca were incredibly defensive during this game (a good team in their own right, to be fair), which made it difficult, but it doesn’t help that los rojiblancos lacked that extra bit of creativity that makes a difference.
Hopefully there’ll be happy news to write about soon. I don’t think I can take another season like previous ones (I say this every single year, mind you).
cheers!

In Pernia’s favour: he does offer a scoring option despite not being great at defending.
You’re right, I think Atletico could do with replacing say, Maniche with a decent attacking midfielder who can pull the strings, but then the backline would have to be solid to free them up to attack, which it is currently not.
Too late now to think about buying, though. As a last ditch option, Luis Garcia can operate as an unconventional playmaker, but that’s just speculation at this point.

That’s another thing that is suddenly annoying me. Why isn’t Aguirre using Luis Garcia more often? He’s an incredible talent wasting away on the bench when we need him most. Why not field him and mix things up– obviously the current formation is not working– why not incorporate Reyes and Luis Garcia in the starting 11. Aguirre should not feel pressured (or feel the need) to leave him on the pitch simply because he’s captain.
Those are the main complaints from supporters. I honestly believe that if we don’t win (in convincing fashion) our next two Liga fixtures: away to Murcia and home to Racing, Aguirre will be shown the door.

I followed it via Internet radio and live text feed.
I hope that our fixtures don’t conflict with Real Madrid or Barcelona because they’ll be given air time over us. Last season we were spoiled with nearly every fixture! This season has been a pain in the ass so far.
