Martin Petrov set to leave Atleti?

Posted by atleti on July 24, 2007

Well, it looks likely. Many sources (AS and MARCA) are reporting that he didn’t participate in the squad’s training session– in order to consider offers from a few clubs. I hate to write about rumours/speculation– but it’s difficult to pass this one up because it’s all over the Spanish press (and English press.)

Here are three possible destinations for the winger:

A) Spurs and Man City are in the chase for him. I’ve talked about this before. To reiterate, on one hand, joining Spurs would mean reuniting with fellow countryman Berbatov (one of my favourite EPL strikers, it must be said). On the other hand, Man City are rebuilding a new squad under the charge of Sven-Goran Eriksson.

B) A more recent rumour has surfaced; one that links Petrov to Porto. Atleti have tried to offload Costinha to the Portuguese club while negociating for Quaresma but to no avail. Porto, however, appear open to talks if Atleti offered a lump sum plus the Bulgarian.

In truth, I think it’s unfortunate that he’s quite possibly on his way out– I rate him highly. The problem is he never had an opportunity to truly showcase his talents as he did at his previous club, VFL Wolfsburg (where he played for four years) due to that injury he sustained in 06/07.

Stay tuned.

Thanks a lot–I figured you clicked the link I posted up before I removed it! I was hesitant because I approach it in a vastly different way than the other one, so wanted to introduce it on radio show, if anyone was interested.

All news on the club will be here.

Honestly, i think that Petrov should leave, especially if Quaresma moves to town. He is looking at being one of the 4 or 5 strikers. AM has got Forlan, Kun, Quaresma, Diego Costa, Maxi, and Mista (even these last two can play as midfielders). Petrov would face little playing time…for his benefit he should try to leave and i think that AM can get a few $$$ out of his sale and maybe use that money to buy another 5 to replace Luccin…

Good points, Nathan. I admit, I’d prefer Petrov stay and Luccin shown the door. As it stands, you’re right, he’d receive little playing time, but there’s no denying he’s a good talent.

Between Quaresma and Simao, I’d choose Simao. That’s definitely not to say I don’t rate Quaresma’s ability. Both have a point to prove that they have matured as players and can excel in Liga (after disappointing spells earlier in their careers).
