Jornada 15: Atlético de Madrid 2 Real Betis 0
Posted by atleti on December 15, 2008

Two quality goals and only two points away from a Champions spot.
We haven’t been ahead of Real in the league table since the 98/99 season! Precisely a decade.
Good first half for us with plenty of goal-scoring opportunities. Maxi scored our 1st goal– a beauty. Betis were hardly lying down, though: they had enough quality up front to equalise at any moment. Good goalkeeping by Leo Franco kept us alive.
Leo Franco; Perea, Heitinga, Ujfalusi, Pernía; Assunção (Raúl García 72’), Maniche, Maxi (Luis García 83’), Simão; Forlán, & Kun Agüero (Banega, 81’).
We play Espanyol on the 21-December and then there’s the much-needed holiday break!

So the calls for Aguirre to go have subsided after a run of 14 games unbeaten.Maybe we can have some sensible debate now.Yes he is no genius.Yes we will probably not win the league under him but the team has improved year on year and he has always achieved his objectives-UEFA in the 1st year (just!)CL in the 2nd,CL again and a last 16 in the CL(50% achieved so far).He has built an exciting, attacking team who on their day can score against any team in the world. The football is much better than a few years ago when we had to watch 0-0s in half empty stadiums.OK we look suspect at the back and that is the coach´s fault but lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater, give him to the end of the season at least.

The real test will come in the new year when we play all the top four teams. It’s not always the coach that is to blame when we lose, but it is the coach’s job to motivate the players and to find a tactical balance, which in two years he still hasn’t done.
